West Village Wannabe

I'll tell you what I want, what I really, really want...is to hang out in West Village all the time.

I knew I'd get a Spice Girls reference in here at some point (and I knew that I would likely regret it), but there it is. And despite my seemingly terrible taste, you should know that West Village is a really cool spot to check out in the city and is not really a reflection of 90's era teen pop music (...except that they both make me happy).

Detroit's West Village is named for its location, being just west of the prominent Indian Village neighborhood, and is full of interesting homes, unique shops, and a sense of community that residents as well as visitors (like myself) love about this area.

A few weeks ago (okay, I think it was still summer), my sister-in-law and I did some exploring around Agnes Street which is home to Red Hook Coffee, Craft Work & Vegan Soul and just a stroll away from La Boheme & Sister Pie (which are both a "must" if you're in the area). We were planning to take some photos and  I had noticed the floral mural on the side of a parking garage on Agnes when we had visited the area in the past.  I thought it would be just the place to get started because the colors and design of this wall would make a great background. So, even if this outfit post  is not up your alley, you're probably going to at least like the flowers.

On this particular day, the weather was gorgeous and so we spent the majority of our time outside. I wanted to take some pictures of these olive green joggers (similar here in grey) & ruffle tee shirt  because these pants are such great transition piece headed into fall, partly because of the color and partly because of the style. They are incredibly comfortable and surprisingly versatile. Below I'm wearing them with a block heel & flat sandals (What? I already said it was summer still!), but have also worn them with some leopard print flats & nude stilettos and felt like the pointed toe dressed things up a bit and kept my legs from looking super short. While I've opted for a warm weather look below, I have also worn a light knit crew neck sweater & think a black turtleneck would look great as the temperatures drop.

For me, the "tuck in" for the top is key when opting for pieces like joggers as I feel like I have to find a way to sort of balance the volume that can come from the gathered ankle. I also think that as a petite person, these might look better an inch or so shorter in the leg. I've considered taking them to the tailor, but haven't really gotten any further in the process. I'm aware that in this case it isn't just the thought that counts. I will likely have to have them actually hemmed to have any real impact. If I ever follow though, I'll let you know.

My tee shirt is actually a find from the Target kid's section, but I love the look of the sleeves and how there is still a bit more interest & structure than a regular tee shirt, plus the top still had enough room to avoid looking too tight. It was an easy pairing between the top & joggers and  ended up equally as comfortable as it sounds. I also love this top under my overalls because the sleeves have a little ruffle to them and add just a touch of femininity.

Below, I also added a jean jacket for a little warmth (mine is linked here) & will eventually add a scarf as the weather cools down.

Can't wait to head back in the next few weeks to explore the area bit more, especially for drinks & desserts, but this time I'll probably be wearing boots & a winter coat. At least I can count on some flowers to still be in bloom...
